Care for Your Ears

An ENT Clinic Can Help You Care for Your Ears

If you’ve ever been chastised by your primary physician to stop using cotton swabs to clean your ear you may be wondering how you should be caring for your ears instead. While many doctors will tell you to never put anything inside your ear they don’t give you many further tips for how to take care of them. This can leave you feeling as if you’re walking around with dirty ears and doing nothing for them. The truth is that taking care of your ears is not as hard as you think as long as you follow a few basic steps.

1. Persistent pain or problems with your ears should always be looked at by a specialist at an ENT clinic. An ENT clinic is different from your normal doctor’s office because the otolaryngologists there have advanced training related specifically to the ears, nose, and throat. They can help you with any pain, infections, illnesses, hearing loss, or injury to the ear area.

2. Do listen to your doctor and don’t stick anything inside your ear, not even a cotton swab. Your ears are self cleaning and the wax that can be found inside is a protective film produced by your ears. If you have excess wax inside that is obstructing your hearing an ENT clinic can clean it out for you with specialty tools. The outside of your ear can be wiped with a warm washcloth before or after your shower.

3. Try to keep loud noises to a minimum. If you are a fan of playing loud rock music you may end up causing damage to your ear drums. Loud noises can lead to hearing loss so turn down your music, don’t stand too close to firecrackers and other explosives, and wear protective ear phones if you know you will be in an area with loud noises.
