Dealing With Hearing Loss

Hearing loss

As we age, it is not uncommon for us to lose some of our hearing. Perhaps you are having a more difficult time hearing than you used to. You have to have the television or radio turned up higher than normal. People sound unclear, like they’re slurring, or sometimes you didn’t hear what they said at all. You may have even had a loved one joke around about your lack of hearing. If this sounds like you yet you’re still unsure whether your hearing loss is serious, there are a few tests that can help you. Self-tests are available, but any result should be corroborated with a doctor, who will perform his or her own tests.

Around thirty percent of senior citizens have hearing loss. Therefore, once you turn fifty, you should undergo a hearing screening every ten years or so. Naturally, if you suspect significant loss, you should schedule an appointment right away. During a hearing screening, your doctor will evaluate you using some simple tests, much like those school children undergo. If a patient fails that screening, he or she will be referred to an audiologist for a more thorough evaluation no more than three months after that initial screening.

Once a patient has undergone that evaluation, the audiologist will be able to place him or her on a scale of hearing loss. He or she may fall on the scale anywhere from normal hearing to profound hearing loss.  Depending upon a patient’s particular level of loss, he or she may be fitted for hearing aids. If the hearing loss is profound or complete, cochlear implants are also available. While aging is not the only reason for hearing loss, it is a fact of life. Just remember to be checked out regularly. After all, you want to be able to hear all the wonderful sounds life has to offer!
