Mandibular Torus

Mandibular Torus

Mandibular torus or torus mandibularis is a bony benign growth located in the mandible (in the lower jaw and it holds the lower teeth in place) along the surface nearest to the tongue.

The size of the tori or exostosis may fluctuate throughout life, and in some cases the tori can be large enough to touch each other in the midline of the mouth.

Torus mandibularis requires treatment when there are problems with function, trouble with denture placement, or irritation from recurring traumatic surface ulceration (usually from sharp foods, such as potato chips or fish bones).

When treatment is elected, the mandibular torus may be chiseled off of the cortex or removed with a bone burr cutting through the base of the lesion.
