Information about throat surgery

Nasendoscopy and flexible laryngoscopy

A nasendoscopy is the examination of the nose and upper airways by the use of a small flexible tube (endoscope) that allows a doctor to examine these areas. The examination examines the nose, the back of the nasal cavity, the back of the mouth and tongue and upper part of the voice box.

Quinsy

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA), also called a quinsy or abbreviated as PTA is a recognized complication of tonsillitis and consists of a collection of pus beside the tonsil in what is referred to as Peritonsilar space.

Recovery after tonsil and adenoid removal

Patients usually stay in hospital overnight after tonsil and adenoid removal surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you home. Antibiotics and pain relief medication may be required for the first week after surgery.

Tonsil and adenoid

The tonsils are two clumps of tissue, on either side of the throat, embedded in a pocket at the side of the palate (roof of the mouth).  The lower edge of each tonsil is beside the tongue – way in the back of the throat. Each tonsil has pits on its surface (crypts) that go into the tonsil.

Tonsil removal – tonsil and adenoid surgery

Vocal cord paralysis

Vocal cord paresis and paralysis result from abnormal nerve input to the voice box muscles (laryngeal muscles). Paralysis is the total interruption of nerve impulse, resulting in no movement.
