Post Operative Sinus Care
Sinus rinses are used after sinus surgery to care for the nose. A sinus rinse (flush) is a salt water solution that cleans out the nasal sinuses, keeping them moist and preventing nasal crusting, which can lead to infection, scarring and discomfort.
About using sinus flushes
Performing sinus rinses after surgery is the most important action you, the patient, can take after surgery to improve your recovery.
How many times per day should I rinse?
Rinsing between 3 to 5 times per day is recommended. If you are flushing 3 times per day and notice mucous, clots or feel congested, you may not be flushing enough.
How long should I flush for?
Use the sinus flush for a couple of weeks before surgery, and continue to use the sinus flush for 14 days after surgery (unless otherwise advised). Begin to flush post operatively, 24 hours after your surgery.
How do I use a sinus rinse?
Here is a video on how to use a sinus rinse. Even if you purchase a different brand, the principle remains the same.
What do I do after I flush?
You may be given an ointment such as Bactroban to use. Using your thumb (in the thumbs up position), wipe a pea sized drop into each nostril.
Where can I get a sinus rinse system?
Sinus rinses can be purchased from a pharmacy. You do not need a script to get one. There are many brands which provide ready made nasal irrigation such as FLO, FESS and Narium. Sachets of the salt solution can be purchased separately, and you will need around 120 doses for after surgery (3x per day for 6 weeks).
Alternatively, you can make your own solution with ¼ tsp non iodised salt, ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda, and 250mL of water.
How do I use nasal drops?
Your doctor may prescribe you nasal drops. Follow the instructions on the prescription.
To use nasal drops, lay down on your back or sit in a chair. Tilt your head back as far as you can and use dropper. Come to a seated position, head forward, and roll head from side to side. Stay seated with your head forward for a few minutes.
