Philosophy
Rhinoplasty surgery is also known as:
- Nasal surgery
- Nose job
- Nose plastic surgery
- Nose reshaping
- Nose surgery
The goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing nose that functions well for breathing – and is balanced with the rest of the face and appearance
Several consultations are often needed to ensure the surgeon and patient have the same expectations and to ensure best results
Types of rhinoplasty procedures
- There are many different reasons why patients require rhinoplasty surgery
- Accordingly there are many different challenges to the surgeon, based on the wants, needs and physical condition of the patient
- Rhinoplasty may be performed as a scarless (closed) procedure or open structure procedure (through a small incision under the nose) depending on what is needed to best achieve the desired results
Rhinoplasty surgery may be performed for many reasons including:
Primary rhinoplasty
- First time patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose or have a blocked nose
Revision rhinoplasty surgery
- Patients who have had rhinoplasty surgery before and want it corrected to look better
Rhinoplasty in teenagers and young adults
- Rhinoplasty may be needed in this situation after sporting injuries, for a broken nose or for people unhappy with the appearance of their nose
Cleft lip rhinoplasty
- Patients who are born with a cleft deformity may have severe nasal deformity which requires definitive rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction in the teenage years
- Cleft lip rhinoplasty focuses on improving the breathing passages together with the overall look of the nose and face
Ageing rhinoplasty
- The nose will age along with the face and tends to grow in size and elongate
- Many individuals look younger by just improving the appearance of the nose
- Like the ears, the nose becomes thicker, wider and longer as we get older
- With rhinoplasty or nasal plastic surgery the nose becomes more youthful looking and this may be all that is needed to create a younger looking face
Chin Augmentation
- The nose and chin are inseparable when looking at one’s profile
- Chin augmentation is a common procedure performed to improve the balance of the facial profile and correct a receding chin due to congenital deficiency, age-related bone resorption or facial trauma
- A receding chin can make the nose seem larger or make the neck appear fatty and undefined
- A chin implant gives more projection of the chin and a better shape
- This surgery is performed through the inside of the mouth with no external scar
Rhinoplasty consultation
- In the comprehensive rhinoplasty consultation we will spend a significant amount of time discussing the looks and functional concerns of the patient to ensure the best rhinoplasty outcome will be achieved
- The history will be reviewed in detail including age, skin thickness, profile, aesthetics of the nose, nasal – lip relationship, nasal – chin relationship, history of trauma, history of prior nasal surgery, breathing assesment, septal deviation, nasal valves, allergies and sinus disease
- These details are all covered during your consultation before any surgery is performed
- A careful nasal and facial exam will be conducted and photographs of the patient will be taken and evaluated
- After your consultation you and Dr. Barakate will go over the treatment plan in detail
- A week before surgery you will have another consultation to be sure any wants and needs are met, and to go over what has been planned – pre and post operative instructions will be finalised
After rhinoplasty
- In most cases rhinoplasty requires an overnight hospital stay
- The recovery time generally lasts between one and two weeks
- A splint on the nose will be applied and will be removed one week later
- Following the rhinoplasty surgery, you will be seen for appointments as needed in the first three months
- You will thereafter be seen every three months for a one-year period and annually after that time frame as needed
- Follow up is a key component of rhinoplasty as the nose will continue to improve over the first 12 months
- For patients from out of the area, special arrangements will be made to ensure appropriate recovery
- Rhinoplasty, unlike all other cosmetic procedures requires a long-term commitment by the surgeon and the patient in order to ensure a successful and satisfactory outcome
- This is a pre-requisite for Dr. Barakate from any patient that desires to have nasal surgery
- The outcome of rhinoplasty surgery relies on precise techniques to improve the aesthetics and breathing function of the nose – pre-operative planning is paramount to successful outcome.
Rhinoplasty cost
- If you are considering nasal surgery, remember that most insurance companies will only pay for functional rhinoplasty procedures that improve breathing or restore appearance after a deforming nasal fracture
- Cosmetic rhinoplasty changes are not covered by insurance and we have package pricing available depending on the surgery required
Rhinoplasty by an ENT – head and neck surgeon
- ENT – head and neck surgeons can provide a complete evaluation and treatment options regarding rhinoplasty
- An ENT specialist can receive up to 15 years of university and post-graduate training in surgery, concentrating on ear, nose and throat procedures
- Because they study the complex anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the entire head and neck, ENT specialists are uniquely qualified to perform the procedures that affect the nose
