How to use ear infection drops
- Turn your head so that the ear to be treated is directly upward or facing the ceiling
- The drops should be at room temperature prior to use
- To open the ear canal in children gently pull the bottom of the ear down and back – in adults the top of the ear is pulled up and back
- The drops are placed directly into the canal without touching the ear with the dropper
- Then the small cartilage just in front of the ear canal is gently pressed down over the opening of the ear canal and pumped in and out several times to make sure the drops get into the ear
- You may place a cotton ball in the ear for 10 to 15 minutes to collect excess solution
Note that:
- Skin rash around the ear canal or pain after using ear drops may indicate that you are sensitive to one of the ingredients in the drops – discontinue use and contact your doctor
- It is not uncommon to experience some dizziness after using ear drops – the dizziness should pass soon, but if it persists you should contact your doctor
- Ensure the drops are at room temperature before use to help minimise dizziness
