Information about the nose

Allergy and Hay Fever

Allergens can evoke a chain of events at the cellular level which are responsible for the well-known symptoms of nasal allergy. The first line treatment of nasal allergy is avoidance therapy – minimising exposure to irritants to the nose is very important.

Blocked Nose

A blocked nose may be due to nasal septal deviation, turbinate enlargement and nasal polyps. Surgery may be the recommended treatment if the deviated septum is causing troublesome nosebleeds or recurrent sinus infections.

Broken nose

For noticeably displaced bones, surgeons often attempt to return the nasal bones to a straighter position under local or general anesthesia. This is usually done within seven to ten days after injury, so that the bones don’t heal in a displaced position.

Nose Bleed Precautions

Nose bleeds are common in children and are usually not serious. Seek medical attention if nosebleeds are severe or frequent or prolonged. This page provides general information for managing a nasal bleed.

Nose surgery

Nose surgery may be needed for appearance, previous fracture, hay fever, sinus infection, nasal polyps, septal deviation and turbinate enlargement. Nasal surgery is performed to optimize the size and shape of the nose in order to achieve harmonious facial proportions.

Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria. It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants. Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a doctor’s diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection.

Sinus, Hay Fever, Sinusitis and Nasal Polyps

Ear Nose Throat specialists can provide complete management of nasal and sinus conditions. Because they study the complex anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the entire head and neck, ENT specialists are uniquely qualified to manage allergic rhinitis, sinusitis and nasal polyps and perform procedures on the nose and sinuses.

Rhinoplasty

There are many indications for rhinoplasty surgery. Accordingly there are many different considerations based on the wants, needs and condition of the patient. Rhinoplasty may be performed as a scarless (closed) procedure or open structure procedure (through a small incision under the nose) depending on what is needed to best achieve the desired results.

Taste and Smell

How do smell and taste work? Taste and smell are more complicated than you might think.  Taste and smell belong to our chemical sensing system. The process of smelling and tasting begins when molecules released by the substances around us stimulate special nerve cells in the nose, mouth, or throat.

The Different Types of Sinusitis

ENT specialists in Sydney see patients with various degrees of sinusitis. In some cases, the problem can be resolved in a matter of weeks with medical remedies. For patients with ongoing sinus problems despite medical management, surgery may be needed.
