After sinus surgery
The recovery period after sinus surgery is generally smooth and uncomplicated – the following advice provides general information that may help you plan for a comfortable recovery after sinus surgery.
Endoscopic sinus surgery
Endoscopic sinus surgery is safe and effective treatment for patients with sinus conditions. Contemporary sinus surgery is performed using fibreoptic telescopes and other modern instruments. Sinus surgery relieves the symptoms of sinusitis.
Nasal surgery
During nose surgery recovery for the 2-3 weeks you may experience nasal discharge and nasal congestion. This is to be expected and will gradually subside. Depending on the type of nasal surgery you have undergone, you will need to remain off work for 1-2 weeks – please ask for advice.
Nose problems
Information on the various problems associated with the nose, including allergies and hay fever, taste and smell, a blocked, broken or bleeding nose and common nose infections such as sinusitis. Surgical options to address such nose problems are also discussed (i.e. rhinoplasty).
Septoplasty
A blocked nose is often caused by a bent nasal septum. Nasal examination including nasal endoscopy will assess the internal structures of the nose and identify the cause of a blocked nose. If sinusitis is suspected in addition to a nasal septal deviation, then a CT scan will be helpful.
Recovery after nose and sinus surgery
Patients may go home the same day or stay in hospital overnight after surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you home. It is normal to have a blood stained discharge from the nose initially. Antibiotics may be required for the first week after nose surgery.
Treatments for sinus
Saline sprays are available “over the counter” at most pharmacies. These solutions contain salt water and a preservative – they sometimes sting but most patients find that it helps nasal symptoms improve considerably.
Turbinate reduction
The nasal turbinates are structures in the side walls of the nose that act to warm and humidify the air inhaled through the nose. Turbinate reduction surgery is also called turbinoplasty surgery and may be performed together with septoplasty, rhinoplasty and sinus surgery.
